Yu Jie joined Ding Yi Music Company in 2026, serving as a part-time huqin musician.
Yu Jie began learning the erhu at the age of 9 under the tutelage of renowned erhu master Zhang Yu Ming. At age 14, she attained dual performance diplomas from the Chinese instrumental examinations by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Centre for the Arts and the China Central Conservatory of Music, co-organized with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).
Yu Jie has won multiple awards in both local and international competitions, including the Singapore Chinese Music Competition and the Nanyang International Music Competition. In 2017, she auditioned into the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (SNYCO) and was appointed as co-concertmaster two years later. In 2022, she was selected to perform as a concerto soloist in “Ode of King of Western Chu” with the SNYCO, and in 2023, she was again selected to perform “Lord of Western Qin” with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, both performances receiving critical acclaim.
In 2020, Yu Jie was admitted to NAFA’s Diploma in Music programme, where she was awarded a full scholarship. During her studies, she served as concertmaster of the NAFA Chinese Orchestra. In late 2021, she was selected for NAFA’s Talent Development Programme and graduated in 2023 with the Best Graduate Award for her diploma cohort, as well as the prestigious “NAFA Chairman Award”. Continuing with her Bachelor of Music studies at NAFA, Yu Jie’s outstanding academic and artistic achievements earned her the OCBC Local Undergraduate Scholarship. She graduated in 2025 with First Class Honours and was once again recognised with the Best Graduate Award of her cohort and NAFA’s top premier award, the Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal.
Presently, Yu Jie also performs regularly as a contract huqin musician with the TENG Ensemble. Beyond the erhu, gaohu and zhonghu, Yu Jie explores instruments like the banhu, jinghu and Nanyin erxian, deepening her mastery of the huqin family. Her refined, expressive style brings music to life with emotional depth, aiming to create a strong connection with her audience.
