Yvonne Tay is a visionary Singaporean guzheng soloist, Artistic Director, and educator whose multifaceted practice has significantly reshaped the contemporary landscape of Chinese instrumental music. Recognised for her expressive depth and technical refinement, Yvonne bridges heritage traditions with modern performance practice through orchestral, chamber, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Her artistic philosophy is centered on the concept of “Evolutionary Tradition”—viewing the guzheng not as a static relic, but as a dynamic, living medium for contemporary storytelling. By prioritising structural clarity and tonal refinement, she ensures the instrument remains resonant and accessible within a globalised musical context, bridging the gap between historical legacy and present-day innovation.
As the Artistic Director of Music Kneads, Yvonne pioneered a multisensory concert project that integrates music and gastronomy. This innovative initiative presented multiple commissioned world premieres, such as Chen Zhangyi’s Eight Hundred Bowls and Koh Cheng Jin’s Flavourful Delights, establishing new audience engagement models for the Chinese instrumental genre. Her commitment to expanding the guzheng’s repertoire is further reflected in her curated solo recitals, such as Onwards and Protégés of Brilliance, where she led world and regional premieres of significant works by both Singaporean and international composers.
Yvonne’s artistic foundation was established under the renowned pedagogue Yin Qun at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), followed by a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from the Royal College of Music and NAFA. Her performances have been hailed by reviewers as “deeply expressive and refined”, noted specifically for her exceptional tonal control and structural clarity. Her versatility as a soloist is evidenced by appearances with leading ensembles, including the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and the China National Symphony Orchestra. Beyond the concert hall, she recorded for Disney’s Mulan soundtrack and has contributed to prestigious international production libraries, such as the “Phoenix” library for Orchestra Tools.
A full-time musician with Ding Yi Music Company since 2017, Yvonne has been a key figure in Singapore’s leading Chinese chamber ensemble. Her international footprint is extensive, with performances spanning Asia, Europe, and North America, representing Singapore’s artistry at major festivals like the Rainforest World Music Festival and the Taoyuan Traditional Music Festival. Her leadership extends to the Singapore Chinese Music Federation Youth Chapter as Vice Chairman and the Singapore Qinzheng Association as Secretary General, where she actively supports sector development and youth initiatives.
Yvonne is deeply invested in nurturing future talent as a Guzheng Lecturer at Singapore Raffles Music College and an instructor for numerous school guzheng ensembles. She has led them to consistent “Distinction” awards at the Singapore Youth Festival and has served as an adjudicator for international competitions in Macau and Indonesia. Her excellence has been recognized through prestigious accolades, including the National Arts Council Arts Scholarship, the NAFA Best Graduate Award, and first prizes in the National Chinese Music Competition across the Junior, Youth, and Open categories.
Through sustained excellence in performance, new work creation, and artistic leadership, Yvonne continues to shape the evolving landscape of Chinese instrumental music in Singapore and beyond.
